A Nostalgic Look Back at CCB

Embelisseur Abricot Agnès B Review | Skincare Reviews | Balkis Beauty

🇬🇧 If you were a beauty lover in the late ’90s or early 2000s, there’s a good chance you remember the thrill of receiving a glossy catalogue in the mail filled with curated makeup and skincare creations by French designer Agnès B. and legacy brands like Maniatis. Before the age of beauty influencers and Instagram hauls, there was the Club des Créateurs de Beauté—or CCB for short—a cult-favourite, mail-order beauty brand that defined a generation’s relationship with French glamour.

A Club Like No Other

Launched in 1987, Club des Créateurs de Beauté was the brainchild of L’Oréal and 3 Suisses, a French catalogue retailer. The idea was revolutionary at the time: bring together top fashion designers and beauty artists to create exclusive makeup and skincare lines. The result? A constantly evolving collection of chic, accessible beauty products that felt like insider secrets.

From the iconic Cosmence Papaya Scrub to the silky-soft Monobulle eye shadows from Agnès b., and the best-selling embellisseur abricot that every French girl swore by, CCB wasn’t just a brand, it was a mood. Shopping from the CCB catalogue was a whole experience, from checking your mailbox daily around the time it arrived (with its sample under wrapping, often the Monobulle in Green&Pink), to marking the pages of desired products.

The Romance of the Catalogue

Part of what made CCB so special was its tactile experience. Long before e-commerce exploded, CCB sent out beautifully designed catalogues. They were lush, aspirational, and just a bit mysterious, even featuring supermodels, dramatic lighting, and poetic product names that made even a simple blush sound like a masterpiece.

For the young woman I was and teenagers dreaming of sophistication, flipping through those pages offered a portal into an effortlessly elegant world.

Icons in the Making

Many beauty obsessives still remember Agnès b.’s Liner Metallic and Maniatis shampoos with cult-like devotion. Each designer collaboration brought its own flair. These weren’t just celebrity endorsements; they were curated experiences where fashion met function in truly wearable, beloved formulas.

CCB was also one of the first to pair affordable pricing with luxury-style branding. The result was a sense of attainable opulence. It made beauty democratic without ever sacrificing style.

The Quiet Fade-Out

Despite its loyal fan base, CCB struggled in the digital age. As the retail world shifted to online giants and influencers redefined how products were discovered and marketed, the brand’s catalogue-first model slowly lost ground. In 2011, L’Oréal sold the brand, and by 2014, Club des Créateurs de Beauté officially shut its doors.

For many, its disappearance felt like the end of an era. But in true nostalgic fashion, former fans still swap stories, hunt for long-lost products on eBay, and sigh wistfully at the memory of their first grown-up lipstick bought from the catalogue pages of CCB.

Why It Still Matters

In today’s fast-paced, hyper-visual beauty landscape, where trends cycle faster than a TikTok video, there’s something deeply comforting about remembering the slower, more intentional beauty rituals of the past. CCB represents a time when discovery felt personal, and makeup was a matter of elegance, not algorithms.

The legacy of Club des Créateurs de Beauté lives on not just in vintage product stashes, but in the hearts of those who grew up with it. For those who long for a touch of the poetic, a hint of old-school glamour, and a reminder of a time when beauty came in the mail, CCB remains, beautifully, unforgettable.
