La Sultane De Saba

La Sultane De Saba | Beauty Blog

🇬🇧 One of my favourite things to do when I’m in Paris is to visit the spa La Sultane de Saba. They have a couple of locations across town but the one at 78 Rue Boissière in the 16thArrondissement was always the most convenient one for me as it happened to be right next to my aunt’s place in Rue Lauriston.

I have these vivid memories of going up Rue Boissière from the tube station of the same name below and already starting to smell all the fragrances coming from the spa all over the street. Amber, musk, orange blossom, just these scents alone were an invitation to travel, more specifically to Morocco, where the owner, Vanessa Sitbon, is originally from.

Her grandfather owned the biggest hammam in Fès and her mom put the beauty secrets she inherited into practice at her Parisian beauty institute. She is the one who trained Ms Sitbon in these age-old, time-honoured beauty rituals. passed on from one generation to the other.

I was blessed to learn with her, back in 2005, techniques like sugaring, oriental waxing, black soap exfoliation and rhassoul body wraps (a lava clay native to Morocco that cleanses and purifies very gently). My spa in Conakry, Guinea offered similar services and the name Balkis is the Queen of Sheba’s Arab name. It only felt natural to use the brand as my main product line.

Beyond the strictly professional aspect of it, I have grown to love these luxurious artisanal products and sophisticated rituals after all these years. I got my latest, usual Oriental Signature Treatment this past Thursday and it was a treat as always.

A purifying, perfecting facial, the Oriental Signature Treatment is a classic one. Massages which make la Sultane De Saba stand out from other spas; are an important part of the treatment. La Sultane de Saba’s therapists are all trained at the Wat Pho Massage School in Bangkok, Thailand, and you can tell when being in their care. The facial, however, does not include any extractions and this is definitely a minus for me. When I hear  purifying, I do expect my pores to be deep cleansed.

Being a regular, they were eager for me to try their latest facial products so the Gold: Cedar&Patchouli range was used for my facial this time. Containing 23 karats gold particles, staple argan oil (in the Elixir Sublimant), and other ingredients, the line is made out of a cleanser, night balm, a face cream as well as a scrub and a mask on top of their Elixir Sublimant.

The staff here is very welcoming, especially by Parisian standards, you can really feel that Northern African hospitality. As soon as you pass the entrance, you enter another world right in the middle of the sea of grey that Paris can be, especially in the colder months. A warm, one thousand-and-one-nights type of decoration, this intimate space immediately. makes you feel like you’re in a bubble. The treatment rooms are equally exotic with their dark woods and chandeliers.

The treatment starts with a foot massage. My aesthetician then begins with the actual facial (ask for Po). Nothing out of the ordinary: a double cleanse with hot towels to soften the skin, an exfoliation and a mask. A massage is performed after your skin has been thoroughly scrubbed. And as explained earlier, the massage techniques are very specific to the brand and impeccable. Every movement has a purpose and the scent of the products intensely enhances the feeling of relaxation. The arms are massaged next while your mask sits on for a few minutes. The treatment lasts 45 minutes (an hour really if you include the foot massage). And when everything is done, upon returning to the waiting area (where the feeling of relaxation continues thanks to the dim lights and warm chocolate and gold decor), you are offered a traditional mint tea with Moroccan pastries.

Don’t sleep on the product selection in the waiting area, La Sultane de Saba is renowned for its fragrances and scented candles. The natural skincare products (some of them certified organics) are not tested on animals, are free of parabens and come in recyclable packagings. The brand works with fair-trade co-operatives to source some of their ingredients such as their argan oil.

There is a hammam on the premises so having a body treatment here is an absolute delight too, they have added ayurvedic and other eastern rituals to their Moroccan familial traditions.
