🇬🇧 Japanese women are my role models when it comes to Skincare. As a kid, I read James Clavell’s novel “Shōgun” and my life hasn’t been the same since. I fell deeply in love with the figure of the Geisha and somehow convinced myself that I had lived a past life in an “ochaya” in Kyoto.

Other cultures and Western ones especially are only now catching up on Japanese Skincare and Asian beauty culture in general. Intricate rituals and time-honoured practices that have always been respectful of nature make Japanese beauty, or J-beauty as it is sometimes called, a point of reference for anybody interested in Skincare and Cosmetics. Something like double cleansing for example started with Geishas and their need to remove the heavy white makeup they wear.

I stumbled upon Tatcha in 2010 when I discovered their Aburatorigami blotting papers.

For skin as oily as mine was then, these were godsends. But what made me absolutely fall in love with the brand as the products kept coming, was the beautiful, exquisite packaging that held them. This, combined with the visible results you will get from using their products, makes it my all-time favourite brand.

Taiwanese American Vicky Tsai, who decided to travel the world after leaving corporate America disillusioned and suffering from acute dermatitis, created Tatcha. On a trip to Kyoto in Japan, she meets Geishas and discovers a 200-year-old manual detailing Skincare and beauty trends that they followed and made popular: Miyakofuzoku Kewaiden (“Capital Beauty and Style Manual”). This will be the inspiration behind her vision for her brand, which she starts working on as soon as she is back in the States.

I wanted to share my experience with Tatcha’s iconic Water Cream with you. As my favourite brand, it is easy for me to talk about these products and give you guys accurate feedback.

A lightweight gel-cream moisturizer, the Water Cream was specially created with those with combination/oily skins in mind. Made with the Hadasei Bioactive Complex which is proprietary to Tatcha, a blend of anti-ageing superfoods like Uji green tea, Okinawa algae and twice fermented Akita rice, it also contains a dash of 23 Karat gold to give the skin a shine-free glow and superstar heartleaf extract known for its soothing and antibacterial properties.

The formula was recently reformulated to include Vitamin E (Tocopherol), an excellent antioxidant.

Aqua/water/eau, Saccharomyces/rice Ferment Filtrate, Dimethicone, Propanediol, Glycerin, Diglycerin, Diphenylsiloxy Phenyl Trimethicone, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Cladosiphon Okamuranus Extract, Peg-9 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Gold, Belamcanda Chinensis Root Extract, Rosa Multiflora Fruit Extract, Houttuynia Cordata Extract, Sophora Angustifolia Root Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Lecithin, Pistacia Lentiscus (Mastic) Gum, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Citrate, Mica, Tin Oxide, Dimethicone/peg-10/15 Crosspolymer, Dimethicone/phenyl Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Tocopherol, Butylene Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Dipropylene Glycol, Parfum/Fragrance, Alcohol, Phenoxyethanol, Limonene, Linalool, Citral, Titanium Dioxide (Ci 77891)

This makes the Water Cream the perfect product for anyone with oilier skin especially during the summertime or in hot and humid environments. The way the Water Cream clarifies the complexion while diminishing the appearance of pores is almost magical if you ask me.

Those struggling with acne-prone skin will also greatly benefit from it.  Because it’s so light, it is a great product to layer with anti-acne products.

It is also a literal shot of water for the skin and does not end up feeling sticky once applied. Its very light texture makes it a great makeup base; it will not pill under your makeup.

I wouldn’t however recommend the Water Cream in the colder months or as a night cream. The brand does sell it as being a morning and night cream but I strongly disagree. It is a great day cream for combination/oily skin but a night cream it isn’t, especially if you are starting to get older and your skin needs more and more moisture. I like having a dedicated nighttime routine with Skincare anyway; your skin is not doing the same during the day while being stressed by pollution or sunrays and at night while it’s repairing itself.

I also do feel a bit frustrated at how long you have to massage the product in for it to absorb; it does not spread easily. Upon applying it at first, there’s this film that forms in some spots and you have to really work the product in to get it to spread properly.

Please note that the Water cream is slightly fragranced.

A staple in Asian skincare, the Water Cream includes a miniature gold spoon which allows you to get the exact amount of product needed while preventing bacteria from spreading in your jar. A pearl-sized amount is all you need for the face, neck and décolleté and a little goes a long way, especially considering that Tatcha’s products are more on the pricey side.

Oil-free, non-comedogenic, dermatologist-tested and cruelty-free (very rare for luxury brands), Tatcha’s Water Cream retails for $72 for the 50 ml full-size jar, and they also offer a 10 ml Travel size for $23.

I ALWAYS buy my products in a Travel size if the option is available, it saves you a lot of headaches when travelling, and I wish all brands would make their products available in that size (this one is sooooooo cute too, it’s like a little cloud).

Tatcha is now available in the U.K. with the 50ml size Water Cream priced at £67 and the 10 ml travel size jar costing £24.

You can also now order in France without those crazy Customs fees via Space NK.

Have you tried any Tatcha products and which ones are your favourite? Let us know in the comments!

XoXo
