Your Winter Beauty Supplements

🇬🇧 As we’re entering a new season and getting into the colder months in this part of the world, this is a good time to reassess our vitamin intake and particularly the ones that support our hair, skin and nails. If you are black, you know how winter can wreak havoc on our hair especially: we were obviously not meant to be in this type of weather. But even non-blacks can experience hair loss, dryer skin and weaker nails when we get to this time of the year.

“You are what you eat”. This is especially true when it comes to beauty and with new research showing every day more the connection between our gut health for example and our skin (it has been connected to acne, rosacea and eczema), making sure you get the right nutrients in your diet is the starting point for anyone interested in long-term self-maintenance. Unfortunately, our modern lifestyles do not allow for a balanced diet, the food we eat today is not of the same quality as before.

It is not realistically possible to get all the nutrients we need from our diets alone

Growing up in France, supplements are not something that’s a part of everyday life. So it’s only recently that I myself realized how crucial it was to address nutritional deficiencies with a boost. In a country where eating well is part of the culture, most consider that you get everything your body needs from healthy eating habits. But once you realize how easy it is to have gaps in your diet, even with the best intentions and discipline, you never look back.

However, too much of anything can be bad so consulting a healthcare provider and getting a blood test done before starting on supplements is always a good idea. If you are taking a certain type of medication or have a specific medical condition, it’s a must. Always double-check as well if you are pregnant or nursing. It is possible to overdose on vitamins.

Consult a healthcare provider to get bloodwork done before taking supplements

Whether in pills, powder or liquid form (I haven’t included gummies because they’re full of sugar), here are the main vitamins that will help restore elasticity and hydration to your skin, feed your hair and strengthen your nails

-Vitamin C: a staple during wintertime to reinforce our immune system, Vitamin C significantly reduces free radical damage caused by environmental aggressors like U.V. exposure or pollution. A powerful antioxidant, it reduces oxidative damage but also facilitates iron absorption and contributes to Collagen formation

-Collagen: maybe the most important item on this list, collagen is the main protein found in your body. It supports the skin, the muscles, the bones and the connective tissues. Unfortunately, we start losing it gradually at around 25 years old. It is therefore important to top up your Collagen levels as much as possible, as soon as possible. For skin that is plumper, fuller hair (and believe me, they DO get fuller) and stronger nails invest in a Type I or III Collagen supplement that contains at least 6000mg of hydrolyzed Collagen peptides. Hydrolyzed Collagen Peptides are better because they’re easier to digest and get into the bloodstream. It’s for that same reason that I recommend taking your Collagen as a powder or a liquid preferably.

Marine collagen (Type I), hydrolyzed, has been proven scientifically to be the most bioavailable to the body.

-Hyaluronic acid: a lot of Collagen supplements are combined with hyaluronic acid (usually 50mg) but you can also take it on its own. Known to retain more than a 1000 times its weight in water, it acts as an antioxidant to fight free radicals. It stimulates Collagen production but also improves skin’s hydration levels and maintains its elasticity. Excellent for fine lines and wrinkles.

Hyaluronic Acid supports Collagen in your body

-Vitamin E: a powerful antioxidant, it protects against free radicals and supports cellular health. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, it helps skin regeneration, helping with discoloration and pigmentation. It will also boost hair growth and reduce fall. You can take up to 540mg (800 IU) a day safely.

-Vitamin D3: a deficiency in this “sunshine vitamin” as it is sometimes called can lead to new and old hair follicles not being stimulated enough leading to hair loss. Get at least 1000 IU (25 micrograms) or get bloodwork to check if you need a stronger dosage.

-Omega 3: because they promote fatty acids in your skin, Omega 3s are an excellent way to get softer, suppler skin. It will also help the body heal from inflammation and that plus keeping the skin hydrated make them an excellent supplement for people with psoriasis or eczema. They promote hair growth too. But Omega 3s also help maintain a healthy gut and a balanced gut plays an important part in how your body acts.

-Probiotics: Probiotics are live microorganisms, healthy bacteria responsible for your gut’s microbiome balance. An imbalance of bacteria leads to inflammatory conditions. Restoring the balance will help fight the bad bacteria while reducing inflammation, and preventing ageing .You can add probiotics to your diet with yoghurts or fermented food like kombucha or miso. But when adding them as supplements, always make sure to choose a product with multiple strains of bacteria (lactobacillus acidophilus, L. bifidobacterium and saccharomyces boulardii are ones to look out for), at the right potency. A minimum of one billion Colony Forming Units (CFU) is what I would recommend.

There are a lot of other vitamins that support your beauty: zinc does wonders in helping with acne, and biotin (B7) can be found everywhere in hair, skin and nail supplements. But the ones listed above are especially important during wintertime and will give you visible results.

Feel free to ask any questions you may have in the comments especially about Collagen, there are too many poor quality products out there.
