🇬🇧 Entering a new year is the perfect time to build good habits and streamline your life. While the “eat better”, “stay fit” and “drink more water” resolutions are always very popular when this applies to beauty, there are a few more things that you can do to always put your best self forward.

Here are 5 beauty resolutions that are doable and easy to stick to

1. WEARING SUNSCREEN

All the time, indoors or outdoors, whether it’s sunny or cloudy, “through the summertime, winter, spring and fall” like in Mary J. Blige’s “Real love”. Some of you are maybe tired of hearing this but sunscreen is the most important step in any skincare routine. And we’re not just talking about an S.P.F. (Sun Protection Factor) of 10, 20 or even 30 here but of at least 50 (the only exception here is Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen which is an S.P.F. 40) An S.P.F. 30 will not last longer than a half-hour/40 minutes on your skin before you need to reapply. For those of you that are U.S. based please note that formulas from other countries in Europe or Asia are more up-to-date and more sophisticated due to the FDA being very slow at approving new filters.

2. STICKING TO YOUR PRODUCTS

The overwhelming number of products launching every day, each with more promises of eternal youth, can make you think that it makes sense to keep adding new products to your routine. But by doing that, you do not give time to the ones you are using to give you the results you are after. Be patient and allow whatever you are using to prove itself, give it a couple of months before adding something new.

Use each product at least three months

3. CLEANING YOUR MAKEUP BRUSHES

Makeup brushes harbour oil, residue and dead skin cells with regular use and if not washed thoroughly they can infect the skin (we’re talking about the beauty blender here as well). This one probably sounds like a chore for a lot of people but it will spare you potential infections and breakouts. You need to wash the brushes used with creamy products like foundations or concealers more often than the ones you use with powder textures. How often you need to clean them depends on how much makeup you wear. But ideally, they should be cleansed after each use. You can use a disinfecting spray or solution in between washes to make it easier.

I love using baby shampoo to wash my makeup brushes, it’s gentler on them.  The ones below are great and have a low price point

4. COMMIT TO REGULAR HAIR TRIMS

I have never been very good at this but this year I am determined to keep split ends at bay. Getting your hair trimmed every 10 to 12 weeks will restore some bounce into it and make it look healthier.  And I know we’ve all experienced a stylist cutting way more than needed so this can be a bit stressful. But it will make a big difference to your hair growth in the long run.

5. SURRENDER THE MAKEUP WIPES&MICELLAR WATER

We talked about micellar waters and how they’re only meant to be used to help out but makeup wipes are even more problematic for me. Not only are they bad for the environment they’re bad for your skin too. They’re usually high in alcohol and chemicals (the usual suspects, surfactants but especially preservatives which are used in bigger quantities here due to the nature of the packaging). Their texture itself can cause micro-tears in the skin. All that rubbing will irritate you so only use both products when you have no other options.
