🇬🇧 I recently watched a YouTube video by a young black creator (I think she was from Senegal, actually) who claimed that K-Beauty isn’t designed for melanin-rich skin, and I was genuinely shocked by this statement. Even more surprising was her suggestion that the “glass skin” look comes from over-exfoliation. In reality, K-beauty is known for being far gentler than most Western skincare approaches, which is a big part of why it became so popular worldwide. The glass skin effect isn’t about stripping the skin; it’s the natural result of a healthy skin barrier. At its core, Korean skincare focuses on hydration, balance, and barrier repair, and “glass skin” is simply the soft, dewy glow that comes from truly healthy, well-hydrated skin.

I first discovered K-beauty through essences. At the time, I couldn’t quite place what they were—were they toners, serums, or something entirely different? That mystery only made them more exciting. Unlike traditional toners or heavier serums, essences are lightweight, deeply hydrating treatments designed to strengthen the skin barrier and help the skin better absorb whatever comes next. My very first K-beauty product was the iconic Missha Time Revolution Essence, and it completely changed the way I thought about skincare.

Another beautiful layer of K-Beauty lies in its deep-rooted connection to ‘Hanbang”, Korea’s traditional herbal medicine system. “Hanbang” skincare draws from centuries-old remedies, using ingredients like ginseng, black rice, mugwort, and liquorice root to restore balance, strengthen the skin, and promote long-term health rather than quick fixes. This philosophy has been thoughtfully reimagined by modern brands such as Beauty of Joseon, which blends historical beauty rituals with contemporary formulations, and Sulwhasoo, known for its luxurious, ginseng-focused treatments.

I shared with my boss recently that this was one of the discoveries that truly captivated me from the very beginning. Learning that birch sap, an ingredient traditionally used in France, where I grew up, for its digestive, draining, and diuretic properties, could also play a powerful role in supporting the skin barrier and delivering exceptional hydration was genuinely eye-opening.

“Will this product give me glass skin?” and “Can you give me a routine to achieve glass skin?” are among the most common questions I receive through my work with one of the UK’s leading K-Beauty platforms. The reality is that every skin type is unique, and skincare is never a one-size-fits-all solution.

You may already be familiar with the iconic 10-step skincare routine that has come to define K-Beauty, but it’s important to understand that this structure is not a requirement for everyone. Rather than rigidly following a fixed number of steps, the true transformative power of Korean skincare lies in thoughtful product selection, consistency, and patience, working with your skin, not against it.

OIL-BASED CLEANSERS

Thorough cleansing is the foundation of any effective skincare routine. If the skin is not properly cleansed, subsequent products cannot perform at their best. Oil attracts oil, which is why oil-based cleansers are highly effective at removing oil-soluble impurities such as makeup and sunscreen. These cleansers are available in both liquid oil and balm textures, with balms often being especially suitable for drier skin types, while also offering added convenience for travel.

WATER-BASED CLEANSERS

This is your gel/foam cleanser step, and it removes any water-based impurities like sweat. K-Beauty cleansers tend to be a lot gentler. A lot of them are formulated with a low PH to balance your skin’s own natural PH level (around 4.5 to 5.5)

The use of these two products at night is known as double cleansing and was first popularised in Japan.

EXFOLIANTS

This step focuses on removing dead skin cells and clearing clogged pores. You can choose between a physical exfoliant, such as a gentle scrub, or a chemical exfoliant formulated with acids like AHAs and BHAs. In K-Beauty, chemical exfoliants are generally preferred because they tend to be less abrasive and more effective over time. Korean skincare has also popularised the use of milder acid derivatives such as PHAs and LHAs, which are gentler on the skin due to their larger molecular size.

TONERS

If there is one area in which K-beauty has truly been transformative, it is the world of toners. Where the options were once limited to harsh, alcohol-heavy formulas or very basic hydrosols such as rosewater with minimal functional benefits, today’s toners offer sophisticated, results-driven formulations. From milky, barrier-supporting toners to pre-soaked toner pads and gentle exfoliating toners, these modern products are designed to actively treat, balance, and improve the skin rather than simply refresh it.

ESSENCES

Think of Essences as Primers, as mentioned before, they prep your skin for the follow-up steps while rehydrating the skin.

SERUM/AMPOULES

This is the step where you directly target your specific skin concerns. While serums are already designed to deliver active ingredients, ampoules take this a step further; they contain higher concentrations of these ingredients for a more intensive treatment. Ampoules became widely known through K-Beauty, which popularised them and made them into a staple category in modern skincare.

MASKS

Sheet masks provide an intense boost of hydration, and depending on their formulation, they can also target specific concerns such as brightening, soothing, or firming. Be sure to follow the recommended wear time and avoid leaving the mask on for more than 30 minutes (except for sleeping sheet masks). Once it begins to dry out, it can start drawing moisture back out of your skin rather than delivering it.

Rinse-off masks, often called wash-off packs in K-Beauty, are less common than sheet masks, but the ones available are incredibly effective and known for delivering impressive, visible results. This category includes clay masks, exfoliating or hydrating and nourishing masks.

Rubber masks are removed by peeling them off once set, after they’ve been applied using a mix of powder and water.

EYE CARE

I’m always surprised by how often younger generations overlook eye care, yet the skin around the eyes is thinner, more delicate, and far more prone to early signs of ageing. It truly deserves a bit of extra attention.

MOISTURISERS

Korean moisturisers play a crucial role in sealing in hydration and supporting a healthy skin barrier, two pillars of K-Beauty philosophy. Formulas tend to be lightweight yet deeply nourishing, often incorporating soothing ingredients like cica and hydrating powerhouses like snail mucin or hyaluronic acid to deliver long-lasting comfort without heaviness. They’re designed to layer well with the rest of a multi-step routine, ensuring that all previous treatments are locked in effectively. Among the many beloved options, Dr Althea’s 345 Cream stands out for its gentle, soothing blend that suits a wide range of skin types. Other popular favourites include water-gel creams, rich ceramide moisturisers, and dewy “cream skin” hybrids, all showcasing Korea’s commitment to hydration-first, skin-friendly formulations.

SUNSCREEN

Sunscreen is one of the most essential steps in K-Beauty, often considered the cornerstone of any effective skincare routine. Korean skincare places strong emphasis on prevention, and daily sun protection is key to maintaining healthy, youthful skin. With their more specific rating system for UVAs (the PA + you see on Asian sunscreens), they go way beyond the vague Broad-Spectrum label. K-Beauty has also helped popularise lightweight, elegant formulas that feel comfortable enough for everyday use, making consistent application easier, and ultimately ensuring better long-term skin health.
