Balanta Cosmetics & The Touloucouna Oil

🇬🇧 I recently discovered a beautiful brand based in Senegal called Balanta Cosmetics. Founded by Augustina Ephraim, a young Ghanaian lady with a degree in natural cosmetics formulation, Balanta Cosmetics was created after she discovered the Touloucouna oil in Casamance, in the south of Senegal.

The Touloucouna oil (or Carapa Procera Seed Oil), which you can also find in some regions of Central Africa, is called the bitter oil by the Mandingo people that live in this area because of its taste. Rich in fatty acids and Vitamin E, the oil comes from a chestnut-like nut which is from a tropical tree. Traditionally, only widowed women who have never cheated on their husbands have the right to produce the Touloucouna oil. This legend made it a very rare and precious product.  A very popular oil to massage newborns with, the Touloucouna oil was mainly used in Africa for medicinal purposes, its anti-inflammatory properties made it the ideal choice to help with joint and muscle pain.

But it’s its soothing properties that have turned it into an increasingly in-demand cosmetic ingredient. And that’s how Augustina Ephraim discovered this African secret.

Balanta Cosmetics founder Augustina Ephraim

Experiencing excessive hair loss and dandruff when she moved to France in 2011 to complete her doctorate, she started formulating her own products when she was faced with the very limited options available for her natural hair at that time. Her first product, the Ultra Hydrating Cream literally saved her hair and soon enough, people were asking her about the secret behind her length. She started selling her cream, a blend of Shea butter and olive oil that can be used as a body moisturizer as well, in 2017. She took advantage of being in France to learn and understand all the European standards and very strict regulations surrounding cosmetic ingredients and formulations.

Today, all Balanta Cosmetics products are made in Casamance, in the Balantacounda, the area that gives the brand its name. The Solid Shampoo (with Touloucouna oil) and a Herbal Bath Oil containing moringa and hibiscus are the brand’s best-sellers with the Ultra Hydrating Cream. And they can all be used on the skin as well (please note that the Herbal Bath Oil contains essential oils). The Herbal Bath Oil can even be used as an insect repellent or on the eyebrows if you’re looking to grow them.

With the women who produce the Touloucouna oil

Developing more skincare products while maintaining its minimalist approach is the vision for Balanta Cosmetics in the future. The Touloucouna oil can help with eczema, psoriasis, its very rich texture is excellent for flaky and atopic-prone skins. Augustina is constantly researching ancestral practices and her dream is to popularize African plants and their benefits. Her original goal was to develop agricultural resources on the continent while contributing to sustainable development. She stumbled into beauty while studying process engineering but she now realises how it can help her achieve that original goal.

Augustina Ephraim is planning to expand into Skincare
