🇬🇧 As we transition from a seemingly endless winter, where coats lingered into June, to the bright, sunny days of summer, it’s paramount to highlight the critical importance of sun protection. This conversation extends beyond aesthetics and anti-ageing concerns to encompass a significant health issue: the alarming rise in melanoma skin cancer rates, which have surged by nearly one-third over the past decade. It’s vital to acknowledge that individuals of all skin tones, including those with darker complexions, are at risk for skin cancer.

While awareness around the necessity of daily sunscreen application, regardless of weather, has grown, many still neglect to reapply this essential protection every two hours as recommended. This practice becomes particularly crucial when spending extended periods outdoors, engaging in activities like swimming or for those living in hot and humid climates.

In my approach to beauty, hygiene remains a fundamental pillar, especially when it involves products used on the go. Equally important is convenience, ensuring sun protection seamlessly integrates into our routines without feeling like a chore.

That’s why sun sticks and sun sprays have become my main go-to options for reapplying sunscreen cleanly and effectively.

SUN STICKS

Sun sticks are probably the most popular option when it comes to reapplying on the go and this is understandable when you look at how easy they are to carry around and how convenient they can be.

How to Use a Sun Stick

  1. Prep Your Skin: If you’ve been sweating or swimming, gently pat your skin dry using a blotting paper or tissue
  2. Apply Generously: Glide the stick over your skin, ensuring you cover all exposed areas. Don’t forget those often-missed spots like the tops of your ears and the bridge of your nose. Swipe as many times as necessary.
  3. Blend if Needed: Use the back of your hand to blend in any visible residue for an even finish and warm the product. I do feel that this kind of defeats the purpose of using something that you don’t need to touch your face for and a more hygienic product. It is the issue I had with the Beauty of Joseon Matte Sun Stick, you end up having to really massage it in.

It is important to note that I don’t believe in using sun sticks when reapplying sun protection over makeup, it will move it.

Sun SPRAYS/MISTS

Sun sprays are another convenient and clean way to reapply your sunscreen regularly throughout the day. I would recommend these to drier skin types though as they can leave your skin looking dewy. Please note that some of these can end up stinging your eyes like the La Roche-Posay Brume Invisible from their famous (and excellent) Anthelios range.

How to Use a Sun Spray/Mist

  1. Shake Well: Always shake the bottle well before use to ensure the ingredients are properly mixed.
  2. Spray Evenly: Hold the bottle about 6 inches away from your skin and spray generously. Don’t forget to reapply every 2 hours, or more often if you’re swimming or sweating a lot.
  3. Blend if Necessary: For a more even application, especially on the face, you can pat the product gently with your hands. But again, I find that this defeats the whole purpose of a spray.

Reapplying sunscreen doesn’t have to be a hassle. With sun sticks and sprays/mists, you can stay protected and enjoy your time outdoors without missing a beat. So, toss one of these convenient options into your bag, and go out there and shine – safely!
