The best facial oils

🇬🇧 It’s only fairly recently that my oily skin started craving more nourishing textures. As I advance in age, I can feel it changing and this is normal, as your metabolism slows down and your sebaceous glands’ production is reduced, cell regeneration happens at a slower rate. Hormonal changes (with menopause for example) can also have a drastic effect. Environmental factors will also accentuate this feeling of discomfort and tightness, a very strange feeling for such an oily skin like mine.  And even though oils have been on the rise in recent years due to the « clean » beauty trend, the idea of applying yet more oil to my often-glistening skin is not necessarily what I would have thought to be a good idea.

And yet, even the oiliest skins can benefit from using oils provided you use the right one for your skin type. A skin under Accutane can for example greatly benefit from Jojoba oil to offset the very drying effects of the treatment.

Oils cannot however replace a moisturizer. Their occlusive nature is going to act as a sealant and that’s why they should be the last step in your routine. They are very good to use to amplify any other Skincare product you are using according to your concern but are not enough on their own. Listening to your body is a key element of maintaining your health and your well-being and beauty is no different

Always choose organic extra-virgin cold-pressed oils to guarantee that you’re getting the best quality possible.

Always choose organic extra-virgin and cold-pressed oils

The face oils I recommend the most are :

– Wheat germ oil: the best oil for dry and mature skins, wheat germ oil is the richest oil in Vitamin E, a natural antioxidant. It also contains Vitamin K which is very efficient against rosacea and facial redness as well as carotenoids. Once applied, it’s like a cocoon for the skin as it is very rich and nourishing. Wheat germ oil should be kept in the refrigerator and away from light and it should be used very quickly after opening it because it goes rancid very fast.

–Jojoba oil: perfect for combination and oily skins, this dry-textured oil is very easily absorbed into your skin. Almost identical to sebum, it helps to regulate it and its minimal molecular weight allows it to penetrate the skin slightly deeper than other oils. Perfect as a carrier oil, it works wonders on problem skin when combined with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory tea tree essential oil (please note that essential oils are not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding and to children under the age of six). Store your Jojoba oil in a dry place away from heat and light.

–Prickly pear seed oil: thanks to a very high concentration of Vitamin E this oil is very effective against free radicals so it’s ideal for mature and dry skins as it will reduce fine lines and wrinkles. It restores firmness and tonicity to the skin and allows it to heal faster. A little bit of product goes a long way especially since prickly pear seed oil is on the pricey side. It is better when buying to choose one in an opaque container to prevent it from oxidizing. Store your oil in a dry place away from heat and light. (Do not confuse Prickly pear seed oil with Prickly pear oil which is much less concentrated).

–Grape-seed oil: particularly suitable for oily and combination skins, grape-seed oil is slightly astringent and has purifying properties. It is very useful for problem skins. It has a dry finish like Jojoba oil and does not leave you feeling greasy. Grape-seed oil is sensitive to oxidation and should be stored in a cool place away from light.

–Moringa oil: Guinea happens to have a lot of Moringa trees so I have a soft spot for this one. An ideal oil for sensitive skins thanks to its strong anti-inflammatory properties, it has a silky touch and penetrates quickly into the skin. In Ayurveda, it’s known as “sigur” (moves like an arrow) for its ability to rapidly penetrate tissues. A very stable oil (it does not oxidize easily) it won’t go rancid easily either. Store in a dry place, away from heat and light.

Moringa powder is also a very popular supplement
