Review: Lancome's Comforting Facial Toner

🇬🇧 While on the topic of beauty myths (see our previous post on eye creams), another product that has been presented as not necessary to a skincare routine is the facial toner.

While some feel that you can skip this step, I beg to differ. Toners finish off the cleansing process by removing any leftover residues that are left behind by your cleansers (excess oils, dead skin cells, etc…). But most importantly toners close back your pores after washing your face: refined and tightened pores are key to a good looking, healthy skin.

They can also help prepare your skin for the following steps in your regimen by helping with exfoliation or by reinforcing your skin barrier repair strategy.

Recently, toners have been introduced that have anti-inflammatory properties and contain ingredients that are more soothing and moisturising, which is exactly what the product we are reviewing today will do for you, Lancôme’s Comforting Facial Toner (Tonique Confort in French), one of their best selling products.

What it is

Lancôme’s Comforting Facial Toner is a deeply hydrating toner made with hyaluronic acid (a great humectant meaning it will help your skin retain water), acacia honey (a very good antioxidant with soothing properties) and sweet almond oil (an emollient with strong moisturizing properties).

Please find below the latest ingredient list available on www.lancome-usa.com

AQUA / WATER / EAU, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, GLYCERIN, CYCLOPENTASILOXANE, PHENOXYETHANOL, ISOPROPYL PALMITATE, PEG-60 HYDROGENATED CASTOR OIL, TRIETHANOLAMINE, ACRYLATES/C10-30 ALKYL ACRYLATE CROSSPOLYMER, METHYLPARABEN, MEL / HONEY / MIEL, MANNITOL, PARFUM / FRAGRANCE, TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, PROPYLPARABEN, SODIUM HYALURONATE, CYCLODEXTRIN, PRUNUS AMYGDALUS DULCIS PROTEIN / SWEET ALMOND PROTEIN, HEXYL CINNAMAL, FAEX / YEAST EXTRACT / EXTRAIT DE LEVURE, ALPHA-ISOMETHYL IONONE, DISODIUM SUCCINATE, CI 14700 / RED 4

This is an alcohol-free toner, which is great because it won’t leave your skin feeling tight while still doing the job of removing any leftover impurities. It contains a surfactant derived from castor oil, which gives a much gentler feel to the cleansing process.

I was not too happy however to find out that this contained methylparaben and propylparaben as I am not a fan of parabens. But, they are included in products to ensure that the formula does not go wrong too soon and these are some of the most common ones used in Cosmetics.

Lancôme’s Comforting Facial Toner also contains fragrance, so if you have sensitive skin, please try it at first to see how your skin reacts. It is not a small amount of fragrance either and that’s probably why this product smells so divine. But Lancome is known for how fragrant their products are.

A very lightweight texture for a moisturizing toner, it feels like a silky serum upon application and does not leave a greasy, sticky feel. It absorbs really quickly.

The Comforting Facial Toner is dermatologist-tested and sulphate-free.

Who is it for

This was extremely confusing for me while writing this piece. When I originally tried this product, I knew it was specifically formulated for dry skins, and it says so on the bottles that are sold in Sephora in France or on Lancôme’s UK website. But when visiting Lancôme’s official U.S. website, it says that this is suitable for all skin types (“even sensitive skin” when sensitivity is a skin condition, not a skin type but I digress).

I called their French Customer Services to clear out any confusion but was left even more puzzled. They did say they would get back to me by email and I will update this post accordingly.

My recommendation is that this is very much a product for dry skins. The creamy texture is lightweight but still rich. It is the perfect product when it’s hot outside and the skin needs to be nourished but the heat makes you crave lighter textures.

But in Skincare, how you feel in your skin is the most important. If you do feel that you have dry patches or that you’re experiencing tightness once winter sets in, do not hesitate to incorporate this into your routine even if you have normal or combination skin for example, and maybe just use it at night instead of twice daily.

If you do however have sensitive skin, please proceed with caution and try the product first since it contains fragrance and fragrance can irritate:

How to use

You can use Lancôme’s Comforting Facial Toner daily, morning and night. I personally have a different routine in the morning and a more elaborate one at night. But if you prefer a simpler regimen, this product allows that.

You can soak a cotton pad and gently sweep it across your face, neck and décolleté.

Or you can apply this by pouring a quarter-sized amount in your hands to then gently pat the liquid all around your face, neck and décolleté until absorbed. This is especially recommended to those of you with sensitive skins.

Apply it while your skin is still slightly damp so it absorbs faster.

Results you can expect

Bouncy skin and a glowy, almost glossy look is what you can expect with this product. Skin is well moisturised, softer and suppler, with hydration levels significantly improved (hello, glycerin, hyaluronic acid AND mannitol !).

The skin is radiant and luminous and you no longer have that feeling of tightness.  As indicated in the name of the product, comfort is the ultimate goal here.

Where can you buy it

The Comforting Facial Toner retails for 25 Euros for the 200 ml. size on www.lancome.fr and costs 46.50 Euros for the big value size of 400 ml. A 75 ml. size is available as well for 14 Euros, always good to know when travelling. Shipping is free above 45 Euros spent and returns are accepted until fourteen (14) days after you received your order as long as the packaging is intact.

If you are buying from France you can also find it at Marionnaud and Sephora both online and in stores.

If you are purchasing from the U.K, the 200 ml. bottle sells for 28 GBP and the 400 ml. size is 43.50 GBP, free standard delivery on all U.K. orders applies.

On www.lancome-usa.com the 13.4 fl. oz.  value size is 58 Dollars while the smaller standard size (6.7 fl. oz) retails for 35 Dollars. You’ll find it at the same prices on www.sephora.com. Free shipping is of course the rule here (ground shipping on the Lancôme USA website).
